Massive Crash On US-23 Caused By Wrong-Way Driver Trying To Evade Police
WHITMORE LAKE (WWJ) - Investigators say a huge crash on US-23 was started by a wrong-way driver who was trying to elude police in Livingston County.
The crash happened around 5:30 p.m. Monday on southbound US-23 near 9 Mile Road, closing the road for more than seven hours.
Police say the wrong-way driver, a 42-year-old Brighton man, hit two cars before smashing head-on into a tanker truck that was carrying milk. The collision forced the tanker truck to rollover, spilling milk across the roadway.
Rescue crews had to cut the man out of his mangled pickup before he could be air-lifted to the hospital. He was last reported in serious condition.
Two other motorists were transported to local hospitals with various injuries.
Police said officers attempted to stop the man before he entered the freeway, going the wrong direction in the southbound lanes. It wasn't immediately clear why police initially tried to stop the man.
The crash remains under investigation.
