Police: Man Who Stabbed Wife Didn't Recognize Her
A Monroe man who suffers from Alzheimer's disease is in jail after he allegedly stabbed his wife because he did not recognize her.
Police say the 79-year-old woman was consoling her husband when he told her to "get out" because he didn't know who she was. When she didn't listen, he allegedly stabbed her.
Police Lt. Charlie Able shared the details with WWJ.
"Unfortunately, within the last couple days he hasn't been able to recognize his wife as his wife. And, during the course of the evening, his wife was trying to console him and he keeps telling her that 'you're not my wife, get out get out.' And, fearing for his safety or whatever thoughts he may have had, he attacked her with a paring knife," Able said.
Able said it's a complicated case.
"The fact that this poor gentleman doesn't even realize what he's done and the fact that his wife does -- it has a couple of the officers taken aback," he said.
The wife is recovering at a local hospital.
The case has been given to the Monroe County Prosecutor's office, who will decide whether to file charges.
