Police: Man In Custody After Shooting Ex-Girlfriend, Armed Standoff
DETROIT (WWJ) - Authorities say a 53-year-old man is in custody following an overnight shooting and police standoff along the border of Detroit and Redford Township.
The incident unfolded around 2:30 a.m. Saturday at a home in the 16000 block of Five Points, in a neighborhood along 6 Mile Road between Beech-Daly and Telegraph roads. The west side of the street is considered Redford Township, while the east side of the street is in the city of Detroit.
According to police, the suspect broke into the house of his 52-year-old ex-girlfriend, on the west side of the street, and opened fire. He fled the scene before police and emergency crews arrived and rushed the woman to the hospital. She was last reported in stable condition.
Police say the suspect was tracked to another home on Five Points, on the east side of the street, but he refused to come out. Two other people were in the home -- a female who was eventually released unharmed, and a man who police say was highly intoxicated and unaware of the events because he was passed out.
After negotiating for a couple of hours, the suspect surrendered to police without further incident. He remains in custody.
Charges are pending.
