Police: Man Escapes From Would-Be Killer In Planned Stabbing Attack
WATERFORD (WWJ) - Police say a 23-year-old followed through on a plan to kill his friend and was almost successful, but the victim managed to escape the attack.
Raynal Casteen Fossett has been charged with assault with intent to murder for the Labor Day stabbing attack on a 31-year-old Pontiac man. He was arraigned in 51st District Court, where a judge set bond at $250,000.
The incident unfolded around 9:30 p.m. on Labor Day in the 900 block of Elira, in a neighborhood near Pontiac Lake and Casss Lake roads in Waterford.
The victim told police that Fossett had picked him up from his home in Pontiac and the two drove to Waterford. Once reaching the area of Elira and Pontiac Lake Road, Fossett allegedly attacked the victim -- stabbing him repeatedly.
The victim was able to exit the vehicle and he started screaming for help. Police say Fossett chased after the man, stabbing him as he tried to run away.
When the victim finally escaped his grasp, Fossett re-entered his vehicle and tried to run the man over, but was involved in a head-on motor vehicle accident, according to police.
Two citizens who were driving through the area stopped to assist the victim as police responded to the scene and took Fossett into custody without further incident.
The victim was transported to a local hospital where he is currently listed in stable condition.
Police say Fossett was very forthcoming with investigators, telling them that he drove the victim to Waterford with intentions of killing him. Both the suspect and Fossett told investigators they have been acquaintances for approximately two years.
A motive for the attack was not immediately revealed.
The incident remains under investigation.
