Police Kill Man After Chase, Shootout
GREEN OAK TWP. (WWJ/AP) - A 31-year-old breaking-and-entering suspect who led police on a chase is dead following a shootout in Livingston County.
Investigators say Kevin Hassell was shot Monday by a Michigan State Police trooper in Green Oak Township, about 35 miles northwest of Detroit.
Police say the chase began after a 911 call about a break-in at a home on Bishop Road, near US-23. Police found the suspect's vehicle and the chase ended at the suspect's home on Twilight Drive.
The suspect reportedly fired at police during a confrontation.
Investigators say the suspect, whose name wasn't immediately released, had an extensive criminal record and was well-known by police.
The shooting is under investigation. In keeping with state police policy, the trooper involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave.
