Police Investigate Fatal Crash, Shooting In Northeast Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - One person is dead and two others are hospitalized after a shooting and accident on Detroit's northeast side.

Police say the crash happened around 11 p.m. Thursday in the area of 7 Mile Road and  Sherwood Street, just east of Mt. Elliot Street.

Shortly before crashing, a 27-year-old man and his 29-year-old passenger were driving eastbound in a Pontiac Montana when a white Jeep Cherokee pulled next to them and someone inside opened fire, according to police. The suspects then fled the scene.

The 27-year-old lost control of his vehicle, police said, which then rolled over. He received non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital. His passenger, who was injured during the gunfire, was ejected from the vehicle and declared dead at the scene.

The driver of a third vehicle that struck the Pontiac as it swerved, a 32-year-old man, received non-life threatening injuries in the crash and was transported to a local hospital.

Sgt. Michael Woody said the 29-year-old man's cause of death wasn't immediately clear. Investigators aren't sure if he received a fatal gunshot wound, or if he sustained fatal injuries in the crash.

Police have not yet released the victims' names or descriptions of the suspects.

An investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information on the incident or the suspects is urged to contact police at 313-596-2200.
