Police Investigate Deadly, Fiery Crash On Detroit's West Side
DETROIT (WWJ) - Police a woman was killed in a crash on Detroit's west side after her vehicle struck a light pole and burst into flames.
The accident happened around 5 a.m. Friday at Livernois Avenue and Davison Street.
Detroit Fire Captain Nick Kyriacou said a gray Mercedes was traveling southbound on Livernois "at a significant rate of speed" when the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle.
"It parted the roadway to the right and struck a light pole, completely shearing the light pole. It uprooted the large cement base of the light pole," Kyriacou told WWJ's Charlie Langton. "The vehicle continued about another 70 feet where it came to rest and unfortunately, erupted into flames."
Police and fire crews quickly responded to the scene and tried to save the driver, but there was nothing they could do. She was declared dead at the scene.
"The lone occupant of that vehicle appears to be an adult female. She was deceased by the time fire got here to extinguish the flames," said Kyriacou.
Investigators say the victim's body is so badly burned, they can't even estimate her age. She has not yet been identified.
Other circumstances surrounding the crash remain unclear. It doesn't appear that anyone else was injured.
