Police Investigate Another Freeway Shooting In Metro Detroit

ROMULUS (WWJ) - Police are investigating after another motorist was apparently shot at random while driving along a Detroit area freeway.

Lt. Mike Shaw said a woman walked into the state police post along Telegraph Road in Taylor at 11:50 p.m. Tuesday and said her vehicle was struck somewhere along eastbound I-94 near the I-275 interchange in Romulus.

"She discussed the fact of hearing a sound that she thought was a blown tire. When she pulled over, she located a bullet hole in her vehicle," Shaw told WWJ's Ron Dewey. "After that we went to the vehicle and tried to determine if we could find a bullet of something to that effect -- which we weren't able to."

Police then went to the freeway, which was briefly closed to traffic as investigators looked for evidence. Shaw said they found nothing on the freeway.

"We're currently in the process of kind of backtracking her route through there. As of right now, we can't even figure out where this occurred, if it occurred last night, if it occurred earlier and if it actually occurred in that location on the freeway. So, lots of investigative work going on right now," he said. "She was on her way to the city of Wayne to meet with her friend, and we're just going to go backwards from there and see if we can locate any place that we've seen her stop or anywhere that it might have occurred."

I-94 was closed briefly as police were investigating the scene, but has since reopened to traffic.

At this time, investigators say the incident doesn't appear to be connected to the freeway shootings earlier this month in Detroit. At least four vehicles were shot at early Dec. 7 on I-96 and I-94; one driver was struck. A silver or gray sedan was reportedly spotted at two of the shootings. No arrests have been made, but police say one gunman is suspected in all four incidents.

The shootings have some commuters on edge.

"I'm starting to get a little worried. We haven't got it settled down yet, and there's no suspect, so it's a little scary," Kevin Hansen, from Chesterfield Township, told WWJ's Charlie Langton.

An investigation is ongoing.
