Police In Macomb County Increase Distracted Driving Patrols
MOUNT CLEMENS (WWJ) - Police in Macomb County are warning drivers to put down their cellphones while behind the wheel or face the consequences.
Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said deputies across the county will be supplementing patrols now through April 13 and focusing their attention on distracted driving.
Wickersham said deputies will be concentrating efforts on particular roadways and looking for drivers who are texting while driving, focusing on major intersections that have historically had a high number of crashes.. The Sheriff's Office will have three or four extra deputies per day for the enforcement period.
Drivers should be aware that, even if stopped at a red traffic signal, they cannot be looking at handheld devices such as a cellphone. Drivers caught texting while driving can face fines of $100 for a first offense.
The month of April is designated as National Distracted Driver Awareness Month.
