Police ID 4 People After Furniture Fires Near MSU
EAST LANSING (WWJ/AP) - Police say they've identified four people believed to have been involved in furniture fires in East Lansing following Michigan State's loss to Duke in the NCAA tournament.
Police plan to present evidence to the East Lansing city attorney's office on Wednesday. East Lansing police Capt. Jeff Murphy said the department is going to "seek as much of a charge" as they legally can.
"Our city attorney will ultimately decide what the charges are, but we'll advocate for the toughest ones we can," he said.
City Attorney Tom Yeadon said the city takes a "very tough stance" in cases like these, adding that those involved are "jeopardizing their careers."
The Friday night game against Duke ended Michigan State's season. The off-campus fires and large parties dissipated after 2 a.m. Saturday and no injuries were reported.
East Lansing has been the site of several past disturbances. Small fires were set last month outside an apartment complex following the basketball team's loss to Indiana on Feb. 19.
In 1999, property damage was estimated at up to $500,000 when the Spartan men lost in the Final Four to Duke. Revelers then overturned cars, smashed store windows and set fires. Police arrested 132 people, including 71 Michigan State students.
