Police: Guns, Ammo Seized From Lodge Freeway Shooter's Home
DETROIT (WWJ) - Police have seized a cache of guns and ammunition from the home of a 64-year-old Southfield man involved in a shooting that shut down the Lodge freeway for several hours.
First Lt. Mike Shaw says it all started with a crash along southbound M-10, near 7 Mile Rd. in Detroit, Tuesday evening.
"She had just happened to look in the rear-view mirror and noticed that he was coming at a pretty good clip and just rear-ended the back of her car," Shaw told WWJ's Zahra Huber. "So (contrary) to some of the witness accounts, there doesn't appear to be any road rage. It just appears that this was triggered by a traffic crash."
Shaw said the 66-year-old Southfield woman crashed into the wall, and the suspect got out and aimed a long gun at her, before walking away.
Shaw said the suspect then fired a single shot at a good Samaritan, who'd stopped to help. That man, who was not hurt, came forward to police on Wednesday.
Police recovered a number of handguns and long guns from the suspect's vehicle at the shooting scene; and, as it turned out, he had a few more guns at home.
"During our search warrant we were able to retrieve six more long guns out of his house and we were also able to locate numerous rounds of ammunition," Shaw said. "We also noticed some signs in his home of possible mental illness, so that is one of the things that we're looking at as a possible motivation for this entire event."
Shaw did not offer any details about those alleged signs.
The suspect, whose name has not yet been released, remains in custody pending formal charges.
Meantime, woman involved in the crash was being treated at a local hospital for a broken arm, broken hip and facial injuries. Shaw said she was not wearing her seatbelt.
