Police: Dearborn Heights Man Guns Down Neighbor Following Long-term Feud

DEARBORN (WWJ) - A Dearborn Heights man is dead and police believe he was gunned down by his next door neighbor.

Police said the two men, both in their 60s, had been involved in some kind of ongoing, long-term dispute that culminated in the shooting, shortly before 7 p.m. Wednesday, in the 6467 block of Fairwood Drive in Dearborn Heights.

A neighbor called 911 after hearing multiple shots fired.

Kat Chaalan, who lives a few blocks away, said that talk around the neighborhood is that victim and suspect had not been getting along for some time.

"From what I've heard, those guys had been at it for a couple years," Chaalan told WWJ's Mike Campbell. "...They'd just had enough of each other, maybe. I wouldn't take it that far as to shoot each other... But if he pushed you far enough, you're gonna get it."

Chaalan said that while the area is a cultural melting pot, everyone knows one another, and it's typically a peaceful street.

"You know, we don't have any problems with anybody," Chaalan said. "You have different cultures, different religions here and we all get along perfectly. We have American, Arabic, Mexican and Italian. And, you know, it's not about where you come from, it's about you guys getting along and being nice to each other...and that's all it's about. "

The alleged shooter was arrested and was expected to be arraigned in 20th District Court Thursday.

The names of the suspect and victim were not immediately released.
