Police Consider Texting In Fatal Crash Investigation

Romulus police are looking into what caused a crash that killed a Divine Child High School student and a recent graduate over the weekend.

Police Sergeant Donald Smith tells WWJ they found the driver's phone on the floor of the car, so they are looking into texting, or distracted driving, a poissible cause.

"It's always a factor we look at in a car crash. I think, personally, that it is underreported. A lot of people aren't going to tell us that they were actually doing something leading up to the crash," Smith said.

"Obviously we're waiting for the Medical Examiner's report, toxicology. So, once we get all those reports together, and we've had an opportunity to look at the cell phone records, then we can make a determination. Or, at least a possible determination," he said.

Smith said they are also considering other factors such as mechanical failure.

The 17-year old senior Wayne Doran and recent graduate, 22-year old Paul DiMarco Junior were killed in Sunday's crash on I-94 near Metro Airport, on while going to shoot senior pictures with friends in Ann Arbor

A funeral mass for  DiMarco will be held Thursday at Church of the Divine Child in Dearborn at 10:30 a.m.
