DETROIT (WWJ) - A Detroit Police sergeant who crashed his squad car on I-96 Thursday morning was legally drunk and had marijuana in his system.

Speaking to WWJ Newsradio 950, Detroit Police spokeswoman Sergeant Eren Stephens confirmed the information, saying internal affairs is investigating the case. She also said Police Chief Ralph Godbee will pursue the sergeant's termination from the police force. In the meantime, the sergeant, who has not been named, has been suspended.

According to police, the sergeant lost control of his car and hit the wall or median on I-96 near Martin Luther King Boulevard, causing the car to burst into flames. At the time of the accident, the sergeant was supposed to be on patrol on the city's east side. He was pulled from that car by a Samaritan before it caught fire. The sergeant was treated at the hospital for a head injury and released the same day.
