Speeding Driver On Mound Road Causes Deadly Crash At 13 Mile
WARREN (WWJ) - Police have closed Mound Road at 13 Mile Road to investigate a deadly accident.
Warren Police Commissioner Jere Green said a male suspect was first observed speeding in Sterling Heights and went into Warren before losing control of his vehicle and crashing.
"This morning, one of Sterling Heights' radar cars saw this vehicle pass by at a high rate of speed. It appears the car just continued, the officer did not pursue the vehicle, and the officer followed on Mound Road and located this terrible crash here," Green told WWJ's Pat Sweeting.
Green said the suspect was killed and several others were seriously injured.
"The bad guy, it's a fatal, crashed into the side of this van which was driven by a lone female, and she hit the car right in the door, a pretty violent impact. She's got some serious injuries and has been transported, I believe, to Royal Oak Beaumont, but thank God because it looks like she's going to survive," he said.
Reporting live from the scene, Sweeting said it's surprising only one fatality was reported.
"Two cars are on the grassy median along Mound Road, there's a SUV tipped over on its side and a passenger sedan with the whole front end, it looks like it was compacted. The only reason you can tell it is a car is because the back end, the trunk area, is still pretty much in tact," she said.
The driver of the speeding vehicle was crushed inside his car. Authorities used the Jaws of Life to extract his body after the Medical Examiner completed their investigation.
At a $2 car wash less than a block away from the accident scene, Danny Crispin watched the whole situation unfold.
"This guy was flying from the cops, they were chasing him, and he was doing probably like 70 or 75 miles per hour and right when he got to the light, a lady was coming though and he just accelerated, slammed into the side of her and flipped her car over. She had no clue what was going on and he accelerated instead of stopping at the red light. He didn't even try to hit his breaks," said Crispin.
It's unclear exactly how long the intersection will be closed. Warren police say they are in charge of the investigation.
