Godbee: Shooting Death Of Detroit 300 Volunteer 'A Sad Irony'
DETROIT (WWJ) - Police Chief Ralph Godbee says they hope to make an arrest soon in the drive-by shooting death of a man who was a volunteer for the community organization "Detroit 300".
In an exclusive interview Thursday with WWJ Newsradio 950, Godbee called Marcel Jackson's death a "sad irony."
"We were all hurt as a community ... and I'm sure the irony is not lost on anyone, because he has assisted our community in being safe," said Godbee. "And for him to be a victim of a violent crime it just really accentuates the fact that we have a lot to do as a community -- step up and take responsibility for our actions."
Godbee said Jackson, who left behind a wife and six children, was an inspiration to many in the community.
"Not only as a Detroit 300 member, but as a father and as a business owner who provided security for various events -- and it's an ironic event from that standpoint," he said.
Jackson was killed outside a night club on Congress Street where he was working security.
Godbee said Detroit police are following up on a number of leads.
