Police Car Market Heats Up

Chrysler is upgrading it's Dodge Charger "Pursuit" police vehicle in an attempt to pick up share of a police car market long dominated by Ford.

The company is upgrading the Charger's stability control to make it handle better in chases, and adding a new "mobile command post" option.

Police departments are taking a new look at their vehicle buying patterns with the retirement next year of the long time leader, the Ford Police Interceptor, based on the Crown Victoria.  Ford is introducting an all new police vehicle package, built on the same platform as the new Taurus.  It will also have a police SUV based on the new Explorer.

General Motors is bringing back the Chevrolet Caprice name for an all new police cruiser, and a new company called Carbon Motors is introducing a vehicle built specifically for police work.

September is an important month for police car sales, because the Michigan State Police do a number of tests on police vehicles.  Those tests are used by agencies all over the country as the make their decisions on vehicle purchases.
