Police Bust 'Elaborate' Marijuana Operation
DETROIT (WWJ) - They're hailing it the second largest marijuana bust in Wayne County's history. Five people were arrested after the Wayne County Sheriff's office raided a three-story building on St. Joseph near Chene on Detroit's east side.
Sheriff Benny Napoleon said the building had a very elaborate growing operation inside.
"This was not a fly-by-night electrician that put that together. This was someone who clearly understood what they were doing. This was highly sophisticated, very expensive," said Napoleon.
Napoleon said a tip came in three days ago, and surveillance was set up. The marijuana has an estimated street value of over $2 million.
Detroit Mayor Dave Bing was also on hand as local media "toured" the operation, Wednesday. In his words, the setup was unbelievable.
"What I saw in there, this is not elementary, that's for sure," said the mayor. "This is really sophisticated, and there are no [other] people, in my opinion, in this neighborhood, that are running an operation like that."
Four of those arrested are from Detroit, and the fifth from Florida. The suspects' names were not immediately released.
