Police Await Toxicology Results In Deaths Of Dearborn Heights Cop, Friend Found Dead In Garage

DEARBORN HEIGHTS (WWJ/AP) - Authorities investigating the deaths of a metro Detroit police officer and his friend are awaiting the results of toxicology tests.

The Detroit Free Press reports autopsies were performed over the weekend on the bodies of 44-year-old Dearborn Heights police Sgt. John Burdick and 45-year-old James McEwen.

Their bodies were found Friday morning in the detached garage at McEwen's Dearborn Heights home in the 8,500-block of Lochdale Street, near Beech Daly and Joy roads.

The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office said autopsy results were inconclusive, and further tests were needed,

The men were longtime friends, police said.

State police Lt. Mike Shaw said the bodies had no obvious signs of trauma, there were no signs of foul play and police have ruled out carbon monoxide poisoning as well as murder-suicide.

He said more information, including toxicology results, is needed to determine how the men died.

Shaw said investigators interviews witnesses Friday — including a few other people who had stayed at the house the night before — trying to piece together what might have happened.

He said the case remains a homicide investigation, until proven otherwise.
