Police: Armed Robber Killed At Hamtramck Pawn Shop
HAMTRAMCK (WWJ) - An alleged armed robber has been killed in a shootout Hamtramck pawn shop.
Police Chief Max Garbarino says it happened around 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Detroit Pawn Shop on Joseph Campau.
"Three males entered the jewelry store in an attempt to rob the jewelry store, brandished weapons," Garbarino told WWJ Newsradio 950's Sandra McNeil. "The jewelry store staff returned fire, in which case one of the suspects was shot and passed on the scene."
A store security guard, who fired on the robbers, is being questioned about the shooting — but Garbarino says it appears to be a clear case of self defense.
"Frankly, I'll be honest, it's pretty stupid for anyone to try and rob someone in Hamtramck," Garbarino said. "Most of ... our store owners are armed, and, not to mention, you know, we're there in 30 seconds."
"I think our officers were there in under 30 seconds on this occasion in particular," he said.
The remaining two robbery suspects are expected to face charges.
The suspects names were not immediately released.
