Police Address Media Following Trooper's Shooting

DETROIT (WWJ) - A Michigan State Police trooper is hospitalized after being shot in the leg. The trooper was injured while carrying out a manhunt near a vacant home on Kirby and Townsend on Detroit's east side this morning.

Detroit Police Department Inspector Dan Allen told WWJ's Mike Campbell that police were tracking a couple of people in connection with a series of armed robberies over the weekend. The suspects were allegedly impersonating police officers.

"There are still members out at the scene, and we believe that there may be two more individuals in that house in connection with these armed robberies," Allen said.

Michigan State Police troopers were on the scene assisting Detroit Police with the investigation, which is when the trooper was shot. Detroit Police Chief Chester Logan spoke to the media at Detroit Receiving Hospital, where the trooper is being treated.

"I'm certainly glad the officer wasn't hurt any worse than he was and thanks to the Michigan State Police, we got two dangerous suspects off the streets," Logan said.

The trooper is a 12-year veteran and he's expected to be ok.
