Police: 6 'Bottle Bombs' Found Near Mall
GREEN OAK TWP. (WWJ/AP) - Authorities in Livingston County want to know who put six homemade incendiary devices near a shopping mall, sparking a small grass fire.
The fire was reported around 3:20 p.m. Monday near Green Oak Village Place Mall in Green Oak Township, about 35 miles northwest of Detroit.
Emergency crews quickly doused the fire and discovered it started from the explosion of an improvised explosive, or incendiary device.
Further investigation by fire, police and mall security personnel discovered two additional exploded devices on mall property and three other devices which had exploded earlier in a home under construction on Brookfield Drive, located behind the mall.
Police say the devices were fashioned from a two-liter bottle and contained various chemicals.
No injuries were reported from the so-called bottle bombs or the fire, which scorched a grassy area.
Police say anyone who comes in contact with a possible "bottle bomb" type device, which is typically identified by unusually colored contents and a bottle that has expanded beyond normal size due to a chemical reaction, should back away, avoid touching the bottle and call 911.
An investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Green Oak Charter Township Police Department at 810-231-9626.
