Police: 12 Dead, 59 Injured In Mass Shooting At Batman Premiere
AURORA, Colo. (WWJ/AP) - A gunman wearing a gas mask opened fire early Friday at a suburban Denver theater at the opening of the Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises," killing at least 13 people and injuring 59 others, authorities said.
The gunman, who is in custody, stood at the front of the theater and fired into the crowd about 12:30 a.m. at a multiplex theater in a mall in Aurora, Colorado, said Police Chief Dan Oates -- who was a former police chief in Ann Arbor.
Survivors told police a man dressed completely in black, in what reportedly looked like riot gear, threw smoking canisters into the crowd before pulling the trigger, seemingly at random.
Law enforcement source says police recovered four guns at the theater: one assault rifle, one shotgun and two pistols.
The suspect's residence was reportedly "booby-trapped," with sources saying police can see what looks like "buckets of extra ammunition" and some kind of chemicals.
Police identified the suspect as 24-year-old James Holmes.
Investigators say Holmes appears to have acted alone. Preliminarily information from law enforcement indicates there is no connection to terrorism.
Police had earlier reported 14 deaths, but later said that only 12 fatalities were confirmed.
Aurora is located on the southeast outskirts of Denver, about 10 miles from downtown.
