Plea Deal Possible In Melvindale High School Rape
Two 16-year-old boys who face charges in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl may never face trial.
The teens were staying in several rooms at a hotel following the Melvindale High School's homecoming game. It's claimed the girl was unconscious after having a drink and that's when the sexual assault took place.
A pre-trial hearing for the two young defendants was cancelled. Dan McGuire, an attorney for one of the boys, has confirmed he's working on a plea deal with Wayne County Assistant Prosecutor Faith Kolb.
"Ms. Kolb from the Prosecutor's Office and I are in the process of seeing if there's an agreement that can be reached on this. She has to clear that, not only with the complainants in this matter, but with Kym Worthy, the Wayne County Prosecutor," McGuire said.
"When it's something this sensitive, it's often to the benefit of both parties to try to keep these matters from getting even more public than they are," he said.
The juvenile court judge set December 1st as the deadline to reach an agreement, or a trial may be necessary.
A third defendant in this case, 17-year-old Tra-von Hampton, is being tried as an adult. He remains free on bond.
The names of the two other boys have not been released.
