Plan Would Free Up Detroit Cops To Fight Crime
DETROIT (WWJ) - The next time you get pulled over for a traffic violation in Detroit it could be by a Wayne County Sheriff's Deputy.
The Detroit City Council is expected to give its approval to a resolution allowing deputies to perform traffic patrols on some city streets.
WWJ Newsradio 950's Florence Walton spoke with Councilman Andre Spivey.
"The easiest way to say it, everything excluding every highway, expressway, and those state roads such as Woodward, Gratiot, Grand River, Ford Road, Michigan Ave. -- every other road you're gonna see, could see a Sheriff's deputy handling traffic violations," Spivey said.
Spivey said this will free up Detroit Police for other duties. He said pretty much everybody supports the plan.
"The chief is on board, the sheriff is on board and they're ready to go, so once it leaves the council table and goes through all the necessary legal parameters, I think that we can put it in effect immediately," he said.
Council is set to vote on the resolution on Tuesday. Spivey said he expects it to pass unanimously.
