Photo Project Offers A Look At Homeless Life In Detroit
DETROIT (WWJ) - What's it like to be homeless for a day? A Wayne State University student will offer a glimpse through a photography project.
Corey Wheeler, 21, has distributed 40 cameras to homeless men and women in Detroit and asked them to take pictures for a day.
In exchange for the returned cameras, Wheeler paid each person $15, provided free food and clothes.
His project is called "A Day With the Homeless."
"The basic story of their lives and the struggles they endure on a daily basis is what I want them to capture on the cameras," Wheeler told WWJ Newsradio 950's Stephanie Davis.
Wheeler, a Media Arts major at WSU said when he moved down to Detroit from Harrison Township he constantly saw homeless people and he just wanted to find a way to portray their lives in a real way.
To raise money, Wheeler used Kick Starter, a website that allows people from all over to donate to a worthy project. He said 89 people from across the country donated $2,000.
You'll be able to see the pictures, an estimated 2,000, at adaywiththehomeless.viewbook.com.
