Phoenix 5, Red Wings 4
GLENDALE, Ariz (WWJ/AP) - A tough loss for the Red Wings as they lose in a shootout to the Phoenix Coyotes, 5-4 Saturday night on the road.
As heard on 97.1 The Ticket - the Wings led much of the game, entering the third period up 4-1. Phoenix came back scoring three goals in the third to tie it at the end of regulation play.
Overtime proved fruitless for both teams and Phoenix took the game in the shootout.
Radim Vrbata's shootout goal completed Phoenix's late comeback and gave the Coyotes a 5-4 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night.
Down 4-1 in the final period, the Coyotes got goals from Kyle Turris and Ray Whitney to get within one by the middle of the frame. Martin Hanzal tied it with 1:57 left in regulation.
After Kyle Turris was stopped by Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard in the shootout, Vrbata put a backhander in behind him to win it.
Ilya Bryzgalov stopped Pavel Datsyuk in the tiebreaker, and attempts by Jiri Hudler and Todd Bertuzzi to extend the shootout hit the post.
Phoenix snapped a five-game losing streak and stretched Detroit's skid to three games (0-1-2). The Red Wings went 2-1-2 on a five-game road trip.
