Permit Expires Monday But 'Occupy Detroiters' Have No Plans On Leaving Area
DETROIT (WWJ) - There could be a showdown next week between Detroit Police and Occupy Detroit protesters. WWJ Newsradio 950's Stephanie Davis reports that Occupy Detroit organizers have no intent to leave when their permit to stay in Grand Circus Park expires.
"We operated our first three and a half weeks here without a permit ... so to say that now that the permit is out we have to leave seems a little disingenuous," said Shannon McEvely - an organizer of Occupy Detroit.
The organizers hope to get an extension from city council next week.
"I don't plan on going anywhere on Monday -- of course this whole movement is based on non-violence and non-aggression and I think I can speak for just about everybody here that no one would ever start any kind of altercation - no one here wants that," said McEvely.
"We have gotten expressions of support from some members of city council," said McEvely.
McEvely says eventually they'll leave -- but in their own time. She says the group is considering taking up space in an abandoned building in the city next.
