People Trapped In Elevators At Renaissance Center When Power Goes Out In Downtown Detroit
DETROIT (WWJ) - Some big Detroit buildings lost power late Monday afternoon — leaving some people trapped in elevators.
The problem started a little after 4 p.m. and is impacting the Renaissance Center, One Detroit Center and a number of other city buildings, totaling about 870 DTE Energy customers.
Power was restored to the Renaissance Center and most other buildings just after 6:30 p.m.
One witness told WWJ Newsradio 950 the Ren Cen was running on generator power and some in the building were stuck in elevators. There was no immediate word as to how many.
DTE Energy spokesman Scott Simons the blackout was the result of a problem at a substation and crews are working on it.
GM spokesman Patrick Morrissey says workers were given the option of remaining at the building or leaving for the day.
Detroit mayoral spokesman John Roach says City Hall has not lost electricity because the outage is not affecting the city's power grid.
Meanwhile, DTE officials say 41,000 customers were still without power following Sunday night's storms. In total, some 95,000 DTE Energy customers lost service late Sunday night and early Monday morning.
