Pelosi Announced As Detroit NAACP Dinner Speaker
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - The Detroit Branch of the NAACP says U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi will deliver the keynote address at the civil rights organization's 58th annual Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner.
Pelosi is the House Democratic leader. She has served in Congress for a quarter of a century representing a San Francisco district and became the first woman speaker of the House.
Detroit NAACP branch president Wendell Anthony says, with what is currently going on in Detroit, he's looking forward to Pelosi's participation.
"She brings a national framework. She brings a deep understanding of how government should work. She brings a constitutional understanding of how government should work -- so we are very pleased that she is coming," Anthony said.
Attorney General Eric Holder gave last year's keynote. Other recent speakers have included civil rights leader the Rev. Jesse Jackson, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., and former President Bill Clinton.
It will be held Sunday, April 28 at 5 p.m. at Cobo Conference Center in downtown Detroit. At least 10,000 people are expected to attend.
This year's theme is "Freedom Must Never be Defaulted, It Must Forever Be Exalted."
