Pedestrian Killed By Hit-And-Run Driver; Suspect Arrested After Setting Van On Fire
WATERFORD (WWJ) - A Pontiac man who allegedly tried to burn the evidence has been taken into custody in a deadly hit-and-run crash in Waterford Township.
The accident happened just before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday along Elizabeth Lake Road near Voorheis Road.
According to police, 65-year-old John Edward Henke was attempting to walk across the road when he was struck by a vehicle. He was declared dead at the scene.
After the collision, police say the suspect -- who was driving a friend's 2003 red Honda minivan-- fled the scene. He then set the vehicle on fire behind a former Sam's Club store on Summit Drive, according to police.
Investigators tracked the car to the 36-year-old suspect and officers took him into custody without further incident. He is now lodged at the Oakland County Jail.
Prosecutors will determine what charges will be filed.
