PED Use: There Are No Shortcuts In Life Says Botsford Doc

DETROIT (WWJ) - Some athletes turn to performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) to gain a competitive edge. But the drugs can do more than get a player banned from sports.

Botsford Family Physician Joseph Williams says human growth hormone, one of the substances implicated in the Major League Baseball scandal, is particularly attractive to athletes looking to gain an edge.

"It tends to rejuvenate the body, especially in older athletes, the down time is less between workouts," said Dr. Williams. "The problem then becomes multiple one is with anabolic steroids dependence on it as well as psychological dependence."

"Whether it's athletes or a person in the gym or at work, anywhere else, there are no shortcuts in life to learn vicariously from some of these professional athletes who try to cheat the system."

Doctor Williams says athletes who use these substances as performance enhancing drugs are taking them in doses that far exceed the medically acceptable range, which is part of what can lead to addiction.
