Patriot Walk Honors Injured Soldier From Local High School
CLINTON TWP. (WWJ) - Around a thousand students, parents, teachers and supporters participated in the third annual Patriot Walk at Lutheran North High School and St. Peter Lutheran Church and K-8 School in Clinton Township.
They heard from one of only 85 living recipients and one of 3,474 total recipients since the Civil War to have received the nation's highest award, the Medal of Honor. United States Marine Corps (Retired) Major General James Everett Livingston urged everyone to have a sense of honor.
"What does honor mean? Honor means doing the right thing, taking and accepting responsibility for your action all the time, focus on what you know is important, not only in your personal and professional live but also in the lives of others that you love," said Major General Livingston.
This year's Patriot Walk was dedicated to 2004 Lutheran North High School alumnus Army Sgt. Davin Dumar, the son of long-time LNH teacher James Dumar.
"In May, Davin was deployed to Afghanistan. One day early in July, while out on patrol, gathering information on Taliban activity, Davin's unit engaged the enemy three times, it was during that last firefight that Davin was hit by an IUD," said Dumar.
Dumar says his son remains in treatment at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, DC. While there, he says, his son explained to a superior what happened that day: "He said, 'I was just doing my job, sir.'"
