Pat Caputo: Several Factors Transpired For Justin Verlander To Take Home MVP

It was a perfect storm.

On Monday, it allowed the Tigers Justin Verlander to become the first pitcher to win the American League Most Valuable Player Award since Dennis Eckersley in 1992.

Verlander was far and away the best pitcher in the AL this season, which had been confirmed last week when he was the unanimous winner of the Cy Young Award.

There also wasn't a clear-cut candidate among position players. Toronto slugger Jose Bautista had arguably the best overall numbers of any AL hitter, but the Blue Jays were not remotely in contention this season.
