It's true. After they drafted him in 2004, the Tigers made a public announcement they were no longer interested in signing Verlander.

Negotiations had broken down.

Eight days later, after Verlander's father, Richard, intervened, the two parties came together on an agreement.

After being named the American League Cy Young Award winner for the first time Tuesday, Verlander is just starting to make history.
