Pat Caputo: In Some Ways, This Was Justin Verlander's Best Start Of The Year
DETROIT — It didn't begin well for Justin Verlander Thursday at Comerica Park.
Jose Reyes, perhaps the hottest hitter in baseball, and a pending free agent Tiger fans are dreaming about like teenagers about Katy Perry, dropped this soft base hit into right-center field. The play was botched by the Tigers' outfield, which means Reyes, who runs exceptionally well, was on second base.
Verlander got out of the jam as Ramon Santiago turned a potential RBI single into a double play, but the Mets' Daniel Murphy launched a 96 mph fastball by Verlander into the right field seats to lead off the second inning.
