Pat Caputo: Do Baseball Records Mean What They Used To?

Baseball is, by far, the most traditional of the four major professional team sports in this country.

As such, its records tend to be the most sacred.

Mention the following numbers — 56, 60, 61, 511, 714 and 755.

Anyone remotely considered a baseball fan immediately knows what some, or all, those numbers mean.

Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak ... Babe Ruth's single-season home run record, which stood for decades ... Roger Maris' 61 homers in '61 that broke Ruth's mark ... Cy Young's record for career victories ... Ruth's career home run record that lasted for decades ... Henry Aaron's mark for home runs that stood more than a quarter of a century.
