Pat Caputo: Believe It Or Not, Tigers Helping Bring In 'Pitcher's Era'
One of the beauties of baseball is the way the game transcends time statistically.
A .300 hitter had value decades ago. He has value now. Probably always will.
Same with someone who can hit 20 home runs in a given season. Or other power milestones that rise by 10-30, 40, 50, 60, 70 homers in a season.
But as much as certain stats will always have meaning, the game goes through definite phases.
And the game has decidedly swung back from the steroids era, when even mediocre players were capable of hitting 30, 40 or even 50 home runs in a season, to a pitcher's era.
Batting averages have declined. Runs scored are down. Home runs are at more of a premium.
