Part Of I-94 Could Be Closed Into Weekend After Tanker Fire
DEARBORN (WWJ/AP) - A stretch of eastbound I-94 near the Detroit-Dearborn border could be closed into the weekend after a tanker truck fire.
The tanker truck burned for nearly two hours following a crash late Wednesday morning in Dearborn that police say also involved two cars. The fire sent flames and black smoke into the air and across the area.
No serious injuries were reported.
Authorities say the truck was hauling thousands of gallons of petroleum. Michigan Department of Transportation officials say fuel spilled into sewers, also creating fires.
The freeway's westbound lanes reopened Wednesday, but the crash, heat from the fire and leaked fuel prompted more work on the eastbound lanes. MDOT says part of the roadway needs replacement and work could run into Sunday.
The eastbound side of the freeway remains closed between the Southfield Freeway and Wyoming.
