Parole Agent To Interview Kilpatrick About $2K Gift
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A Michigan parole agent plans to interview ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick about an unreported $2,000 gift from a Chicago pastor.
Corrections Department spokesman Russ Marlan said the interview Thursday will influence what action if any will be taken.
Kilpatrick is on parole for a 2008 state conviction for obstruction of justice and could be sent back to prison. He's now on trial on federal corruption charges.
He still owes $800,000 to Detroit and must regularly report income or gifts to the state.
Kilpatrick received a $2,000 wire transfer in December from the Rev. Corey Brooks of New Beginnings Church.
The Corrections Department has posted a video online showing Kilpatrick counting the cash at a Walmart store in Chesterfield Township.
Talking to WWJ Newsradio 950's Vickie Thomas on Tuesday, Kilpatrick called the matter "trivial."
However, he added, "I don't think, Vickie, that it's ... something I cannot worry about, being that I'm Kwame Kilpatrick and this is Michigan and Detroit, and the rules are different for me."
Kilpatrick said that he does not believe his failure to report the gift goes against the provisions of his probation.
Kilpatrick lost his job and served state prison time for lying on the state about his affair with an aide. He is currently in trial in Detroit federal court in a separate case, charged with fraud, bribery, tax crimes and a racketeering conspiracy.
