Pair Guilty Of Murder In Kmart Dragging Case
A Pontiac pair has been found guilty of first degree felony murder and robbery in the dragging death of a Kmart security guard.
The verdicts were read Tuesday afternoon for 20-year old Samantha Lomasney and 40 -year old James
who two separate juries decided were in fact to blame for the killing of Greg Wainio outside a Waterford Township Kmart store in January.
Lomasney's jury deliberated just a few hours before reaching a verdict Monday. That verdict was sealed until Woodworth's jury reached a verdict Tuesday afternoon.
Wainio, 36, who worked as a loss prevention officer, suspected the pair of stealing CDs from the store on Highland Road.
Police said he grabbed onto the couple's vehicle while Lomasney was driving and was dragged more than 200 feet.
Wainio was crushed when the vehicle hit a concrete pillar.
Prosecutors told jurors that the defendants' actions were intentional, while defense attornies argued that the couple panicked and didn't know that Wainio was attached to the car.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Wainio's younger brother, Matt, said Woodworth, a repeat offender, should have remained locked up to begin with.
"This is his fourth time -- he was a habitual offender. He was out in eight years on a thirty-year sentence. Why are people like this on our street? Our governor, our attorney generals, those need to be held accountable for the crimes that are committed against normal people by these people they are letting out over their budget issues," Wainio said.
Lomasney and Woodworth each face mandatory penalties of life in prison without parole at their sentencing set for Nov. 23.
