Pair Gets Life For GVSU Student Adviser's Slaying
GRAND RAPIDS (WWJ/AP) - Two men convicted of robbing and killing a Grand Valley State University student adviser will spend the rest of their lives in prison without parole.
Timothy Miller and Maceo Scott were sentenced Thursday in Kent County Circuit Court for the stabbing death of 50-year-old Santiago Zapata, Jr. Separate juries convicted Miller and Scott in April of murder and armed robbery.
Zapata was found slain Sept. 25 in the basement of his Grand Rapids home. Prosecutors said Zapata, a 19-year employee with GVSU's education college, was killed amid a robbery gone awry.
According to police, Zapata was stabbed multiple times with a steak knife. His body was found five days later after police were called to the home for a welfare check.
Authorities have said Miller and Scott each blamed the other for Zapata's death.
