Michigan State Police make arrest after rash of package thefts in Washtenaw County
Michigan State Police troopers have made an arrest after investigating complaints of delivery packages stolen from porches in Washtenaw County.
Troopers from the Brighton post began their investigation Monday after receiving multiple such reports that morning from residents of Augusta Township. After speaking with the victims, according to the press release, troopers determined that the same person was involved in the string of cases.
With the help of a doorbell video and victim statements, they worked out a description of the suspect and vehicle involved, sending that information out to other officers.
Later in the day, a vehicle matching the description of a red Chrysler 200 was seen in a parking lot in the 46000 block of Michigan Avenue in Canton. The driver also matched the description of the suspect who was seen on a doorbell video.
Officers then spoke with the driver, a 20-year-old male, and a passenger, a 17-year-old female, who were both from Belleville.
"During interviews on scene the suspect admitted to stealing packages from from approximately fifteen homes earlier that day. A search of the suspect vehicle located approximately forty-two stolen items as well as several shipping boxes," the press release said.
The driver was then arrested and lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail on charges of larceny between $1,000 and $20,000.
The passenger was released on scene.
Troopers are still investigating, and ask that anyone with information on this case contact the MSP Brighton Post at 810-227-1051.
