Overturned Grocery Truck Closes I-96 At Ramp To I-696
DETROIT (WWJ) - Traffic on eastbound I-96 in Farmington was at a standstill Thursday morning after a Meijer semi truck loaded with groceries overturned, completely blocking the ramp to eastbound I-696.
Reporting live from the scene, WWJ's Ron Dewey said it looked like the 18-wheeler may have veered off from the other direction and crossed the median before landing in a ditch.
Another semi truck was called in so crews could transfer the salvaged cargo from the overturned truck before removing it from the freeway.
Around 5 a.m., Michigan State Police closed all lanes of the eastbound side of the ramp that takes traffic from I-96 to eastbound I-696 so crews could clear the scene.
The ramp reopened around 9:30 a.m.
State Police say they are now looking for a black Chevy Impala that may have played a role in the crash. Sources at the scene say the Impala may have cut off the semi truck, causing the initial reaction that led the truck to flip over.
