Oops! Free Press Book Claims U-M Won 'Second NCAA Title'
DETROIT (CBS Detroit) They say history is written by the victors, but in this case victory was hailed too fast.
A book by the Detroit Free Press that profiles the 2012-13 season claims Michigan claimed its "second NCAA title." Sadly, Michigan lost the final game against Louisville Monday.
But this book was apparently pre-written and ready to go before the game ended. It's listed on Amazon as a "pre-sale" at $10.17.
And though the cover is incorrect, collectors seem to be snapping it up because it's rocketing up the Amazon best sellers' list. "Blue Heaven: The A-Maize-Ing Story of the Michigan Wolverines' Return to Glory--and Their Second NCAA Title!" was ranked 13th under books/travel/United States. It's published by Triumph Books.
The description says, "This commemorative book on Michigan's 2013 NCAA men's basketball championship provides a visual account of the Wolverines' road to glory. Through unique words and images from Michigan's largest newspaper, the Detroit Free Press, this celebratory book takes readers from the season's first games in November and on through the exciting 2012–2013 season, the Big Ten tournament, and the road to the Final Four in Atlanta. Including more than 100 color photographs and featuring stars Trey Burke, Tim Hardaway, Jr., and Glen Robinson III and head coach John Beilein, this keepsake book is an essential part of any fan's collection."
It has only one review, by Todd Ewing, who wrote, "Epic Fail! Guess you won't be cashing in on your team losing to Louisville. Nice try, hey just put this book up for pre-order next year when the Wolverines lose again!"
The Free Press' assistant digital editor Stefanie Murray later released a statement saying the book was released due to an error with the book publisher, adding, "Our publisher is working with Amazon to make sure it gets removed. Hopefully at this time next year, however, we WILL be publishing either a book on Michigan or Michigan State winning the 2014 national title."
