One Killed, Two Injured In Fiery Crash
DETROIT (WWJ) - The Wednesday morning commute began with a deadly accident in Detroit.
The accident happened on McNichols, just west of the Lodge Freeway around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday. Police say one person was killed and two were taken to the hospital with injuries.
Investigators say a Grand Marquis ran a red light on McNichols and collided with a mini van.
Reporting live from the scene, WWJ City Beat Reporter Vickie Thomas said the Grand Marquis caught fire during the collision and the mini van received major front end damage.
Officer Patricia Crawford with Detroit Police Fatal Squad said they had trouble getting the man who was killed in the crash out of the mangled Grand Marquis.
"The Fire Department had to come out in order to use the jaws of life to get the gentleman out of the car," she said.
Another person in the Grand Marquis was taken to the hospital.
"As it stands, we're looking at a possibility of two people in that vehicle, the person that was in the vehicle that the Fire Department just removed was a passenger."
One person from the mini van was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
McNichols near the Lodge Freeway service drive is completely shut down while police continue their investigation.
