Pedestrian Hit, Killed On I-96
DETROIT (WWJ) - State police say a man in his 40s is dead after he was hit by a truck while walking in traffic on I-96. It happened early Friday morning on the eastbound side of the freeway near Michigan Avenue.
Police said that around 3:30 a.m. dispatchers received multiple calls about a man walking back and forth across the freeway. At one point, a witness said he tried to get into a woman's car.
Police said that a truck driver was unable to avoid hitting the man who he walked into his lane. The man was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital where he died.
Reporting from the scene just after 6 a.m., WWJ Newsradio 950's Mike Campbell reported a wrecker was taking away the semi truck that was involved in the crash.
No one else was injured in the accident. The man was not immediately identified.
At 6:30 a.m. only one lane was open in that area of eastbound I-96, but the scene was since cleared.
