Old Mumford Coming Down, New Mumford High School Ready For Students
DETROIT (WWJ) - Demolition of Detroit's old Mumford High School is well under way. WWJ's Pat Sweeting was there as many motorists passed by the building on Wyoming near McNichols to snap photos of the demolition crew taking the school apart.
Stephan Hill, who graduated in 1981, says he has good memories from his years at Mumford.
"Good teachers and things you don't find in many schools today like Wood Shop, Driver's Training - I learned how to drive right here on this course -- right here," said Hill. "Or what's left of it."
Like other Mumford alums, Hill is sad to see the old high school, built-in 1949, demolished.
Howard Golding attended Mumford from 1958-1962 and says he has unbelievable memories of the school. "Academically, it was one of the jewels of Detroit along with Cass Tech. It was an unbelievable ... I don't remember a fight anywhere (during) my four-years in this building," said Golding. "Kids of all faiths, all races, all got along with each other."
By the time the 2012 school year begins, the old school will be gone, its replacement already in place.
