Ohio Gov. Vetoes Lake Erie Water Extraction Bill
DETROIT (AP) - Bowing to pressure from other Great Lakes state governors, including Michigan's Rick Snyder, Ohio Governor John Kasich has vetoed a bill that would have allowed factories to extract millions of gallons of water daily from Lake Erie without a special permit.
Snyder and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo both contacted Kasich's office to express concern about the measure, which won easy approval in Ohio's Republican-dominated legislature.
Kasich is also a Republican.
The proposal is intended to align Ohio with the Great Lakes Compact. It would take a three-fifths majority in both the state House and Senate to override the veto.
