Officials: Oil Spill In Red Run River Contained
WARREN (WWJ) - Officials say a 20 to 50 gallon oil spill in the Red Run River near Warren and Sterling Heights has been contained.
The spill was discovered Thursday evening in the area of 14 Mile and Hoover road, near the Edison Corridor.
Warren Mayor Jim Fouts said crews used three oil booms to contain the spill, which originated in Warren's portion of the Red Run Drain.
Sterling Heights Fire Chief Chris Martin said he spill is consistent with that of an individual dumping "a small amount" of motor oil into the drain.
Officials from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Mi chigan Department of Environmental Quality are expected to visit the site on Monday for an evaluation. A private company is also expected in Warren on Monday to continue clean-up efforts.
Fouts said he's confident that the spill is not harmful to the environment and that the MDEQ is satisfied with the action taken by Warren.
Authorities say every attempt will be made to determine the source of the spill, and violators will be prosecuted.
An investigation is ongoing.
